Objective

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a young adult novel by John Boyne. Incorporating themes of family, innocence, and loss, the narrative centers on nine-year-old Bruno and his family’s relocation to a concentration camp during the Third Reich in Nazi Germany. Chapter One: "Bruno Makes a Discovery" introduces the story’s protagonist and his family as they prepare to move from Berlin to Out-With (Auschwitz). In this lesson, students will identify, analyze, and discuss the narrative style of the novel and the setting of Berlin, Germany, in 1943.
