Kentucky, 1936-Chapter 6

· In “Kentucky, 1936,” a librarian and her mule spot a body swaying back and forth on a branch in front of them with a rope around its neck.
· A baby lies crying in the dirt below.
· A sock falls off the body’s foot and reveals blue flesh.
· The librarian stares and seems to compare the color of her blue face and hand to that of the corpse.
· She considers how she and the corpse are bound together in the “hard, everlasting Kentucky land so many tried so hard to escape” (2).
· In Chapter 1, it is January 1.
· Pa, Elijah Carter, gets out a courting candle and lights it on the porch of his one-room log house.
· He hopes to get his daughter Cussy...
