Lesson 1 (from Pages 3 – 66)
Objective
The focus of this lesson is on narrative style. As a prior homework assignment, students should be instructed to read pages 3-66 to prepare for this lesson. The Book of Unknown Americans is unique in that it employs a first-person narrative perspective from a variety of characters throughout the novel. Each chapter is titled by the character whose perspective is being related. In these first 66 pages, the reader hears the first-person narratives of Alma Rivera, Mayor Toro, Rafael Toro, and Benny Quinto.
