Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 80))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Ana's relationship with her mother. Harad, Ana's mother, is anxious for Ana to get married. Harad does not respect or encourage Ana's writing, and the mother and daughter have no real affection or love between them. In Part I, Ana feels betrayed by Harad when Harad and her father, Matthias, take Ana to the marketplace so a potential betrothal mate can take a look at her. Later, in desperation, Ana threatens to reveal to Matthias Harad's secret that she takes contraceptive herbs to prevent pregnancy, but Harad just takes the threat in stride and calls Ana's bluff.
