Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the history of the Dalai Lama's exile from Tibet to Dharamsala, India. The Dalai Lama has been in exile in India for more than 50 years, and his experiences as a type of refugee from violence and persecution at the hands of the Chinese government have profoundly shaped his perspective, spirituality, and the contours of his life's work.

Class Discussion: Who is the Dalai Lama? How does Abrams describe the process that led to the Dalai Lama being chosen or selected? Why did the Dalai Lama have to leave Tibet in the late 1950s, and under what circumstances did he leave? How does the Dalai Lama seem to feel about his life lived for more than 50 years in exile from his birth country?
