Lesson 1 (from Preface - Chapter 17)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Book of Delights by Ross Gay. Students will read the Preface and first two essays of the collection and will identify and discuss the book’s genre, structure, and narrative style. The Book of Delights is a compilation of 102 essays, each highlighting a delight that the author has experienced during that day, and covering the span of one year. The essays begin on the author’s forty-second birthday and conclude on his forty-third.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Ross Gay, his works, and the publication and critical reception of The Book of Delights. What genre do the author’s works typically fall into? What are common themes in Gay’s writing? What honors and/or awards has the author earned?
