Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background. Students will discuss facts about the author that are included in the book. Students will research information about the author and analyze why he may have written The Boat.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Boat? Where does he live? How old was Nam Le when the book was published? How was the book received by the public? Did it win any awards? Has the author written any other books? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information that impacts the novel’s themes and characters. Regroup and ask students to share their facts. Write a list on the board...
