· Alec Ramsey is on the steamer Drake leaving India after visiting his Uncle Ralph, a missionary, for two months.
· Uncle Ralph had taught Alec to ride horseback, which Alec knows he will not be able to do back home in New York City.
· Alec holds a pearl pocketknife Uncle Ralph had given him on his birthday telling him, “a knife, Alec, comes in handy sometimes” (2).
· Captain Watson tells Alec he is in for a long ride from India to England on the Drake and then from England to New York aboard the Majestic.
· Alec came over with some of his father’s friends and is returning alone in time for school to begin.
