Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 21))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Clark's descriptions of his fictional New Orleans in Part I when he sets the novel in about 1885. In Clark's United States in this time period, the outcome of the Civil War was less clear and some southern states are still Confederate-held territory where slavery is legal. New Orleans is a free and somewhat bohemian area where anyone is allowed to trade, and as such, it is a diverse and interesting city, but one not without tensions.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What are some of the main characteristics of New Orleans as Clark describes it? Why does Creeper love the city? What are some of the dangerous and/or difficult aspects of New Orleans?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to create a mind map with the name "New Orleans...
