Objective

As the story opens, there is a large section dedicated to the introduction of the various characters. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the introduction of characters.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Ask students how the author introduces the various characters in this section. Encourage students to then discuss ways characters are introduced in other stories.

2. For class work: Have students begin a list of characters that are introduced in Chapter One. For each character, the student should write a one or two-sentence summary of the information included in the introduction of that character.

3. For homework: Have students create a character for a story of their own imagination. As an alternative, have students create another character for this story. Remind students to include a few sentences describing that character and to briefly outline the role of that character in the story.
