From the onset, Du Maurier creates a strong sense of foreboding through her descriptions of weather. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the tone of “The Birds” and to discuss how Du Maurier created it.

Lesson

Class Activity: As a class, create a list of adjectives used to describe the weather. How do these descriptions make you feel? Based on these descriptions, what do you expect the tone, or mood, of the story to be? Why?

Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups to research the way tone is created in stories. What techniques to you see Du Maurier using in the opening section of “The Birds”? Give each group five minutes to present their theories to the class.
