Part I, Twenty-One, Beyond Sandy Hook--Father

Hughes traveled across the ocean to Africa with two companions, George and Ramon. The object of the lesson is to learn more about these two men, and their similarities with Hughes.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: How did all three men get their jobs on the S.S. Malone? Were George and Ramon experienced at working on a ship? What jobs did each man have on board the ship?

2) Group discussion: In two groups, discuss George and Ramon. Look for qualities and biographical information Hughes gave in his descriptions of the men and of the trip. Where did each man come from? How old were they? Of what racial background was each man? Outgoing or shy? Intelligent or simple? Draw a list for each man. What traits do the two men have in common?
