Unnamed Narrator

This character is the protagonist and provides her first-person perspective of novel's events. This character lives with her little brother and her parents, all of whom practice the Christian religion. This character experiences spiritual and social growth over the course of the novel as a result of her interactions with a family of children she had previously avoided at all costs.

Imogene

This character is in the same grade as the protagonist. This character thrives on learning the deepest secrets of her classmates and then threatening to tell them to the whole school if she does not receive what she wants. When this character wins the role of the Virgin Mary in the pageant, many townspeople are scandalized, even calling the pageant coordinator to complain. However, this character and her dirty sneakers become key parts of the novel's themes and messages.
