Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the history of the Syrian conflict that effects the characters in The Beekeeper of Aleppo. The Syrian conflict is a civil war that is one of the deadliest conflicts of the twenty-first century. The conflict has displaced millions and killed many thousands. A clear and basic understanding of this conflict will help students grasp the nuances of the experiences of the characters in the novel.

Class Discussion: When did the Syrian civil war that affects Nuri and Afra begin? Who are the main participants in the conflict? What were some of the major factors that contribute to the start of the conflict? What kinds of weapons are used in this war? Where are some of the most common places Syrian refugees traveled to?
