• This book is written from a first-person perspective through the eyes of the character Nuri Ibrahim, and it alternates between the present and past tenses.
• In Chapter 1, Nuri Ibrahim says he is scared of his wife's eyes because she cannot see out of them and no one else can see in.
• Afra, Nuri's wife, tells him her eyes hurt and she wants to go to the doctor. He tells her they need the right paperwork first.
• Nuri is glad Afra cannot see the place they are in, in a run-down bed and breakfast somewhere near the sea in the United Kingdom. It is a sort of halfway house for asylum seekers applying for status in the United Kingdom.
