She has her hair pulled back. This shows that Violet is thinking about something. She is skipping stones and thinking about a way to have the stones retrieved.
3. What is the children's response in Chapter 1 when they hear that their parents have just died?
The children are quiet for a moment. Mr. Poe tries to explain to them what 'perish' means but the children are quite aware of what the word means. It seems to take a moment for the full impact of what Mr. Poe has said to them to be understood by the Baudelaire children.
