Lesson 1 (from The Awakening Chapters 1 -5)

Objective

Setting. The Awakening takes place in the late 1800s in New Orleans and nearby areas.

The objective of this lesson is to look at setting in the context of literature and the particular setting of The Awakening.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. How does it change the "tone" of the book for it to be set in places that still exist today? Is it more interesting? Less interesting? Does it make it more interesting that you can find the places mentioned on a map?

2. Group work. Create a chart listing all the locations mentioned in The Awakening and where they are.

3. In-class writing: Students will write a short paper on how the town in which they reside currently and attend school has shaped their lives.
