The America Play and Other Works is an anthology of plays by Suzan-Lori Parks. Suzan-Lori Parks (born 1963) is an African American playwright whose works are noted for their postmodern examination of race and gender in America. Parks has earned numerous awards, including multiple Obies, the 2001 MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant, and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. In this lesson, students are introduced to the dramatic collection and will research and discuss Suzan-Lori Parks.
Lesson
1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the book and author to the class. The America Play and Other Works by Suzan Lori-Parks is an anthology of six plays and several essays which center on themes of identity, transformation, race and gender in African American culture.
