Objective

Objective: The Amber Spyglass is the third book in the "His Dark Materials" series. The objective of this lesson is to look at series books and the reasons for them.

1) Discussion: Is it necessary that the reader have read the other two books in this series in order to make sense of the story line? Explain.
2) Classwork: Could there easily be a fourth book in the series continuing this story in some way? If so give a plot outline or summary of an idea for the next book.
3) Homework: Have the class look at other literary works that were a series of two or more. What does the author accomplish by continuing a story line?
4) Debate: Have the students debate the ability to have made "His Dark Materials" into just one book. In what way would it have been better? In what way would the story line...
