Lesson 1 (from Preface, Books 1-2)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to understand the importance of the setting chosen by the author at the beginning of the novel. The fact that Strether has just arrived in a foreign country heightens the sense of novelty of the setting. The unfamiliar landscape also keep the narrator's circumstances relatively hidden from the reader, who does not yet see Strether in his familiar surroundings.

Class Discussion: What is the setting of The Ambassadors? Where is Strether from? What brings him to this part of England? Where is he going next? How does Strether respond to his surroudings?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to assemble a list of the different settings featured in the novel (including those that are mentioned but not shown, such as Strether's hometown). Next to the name of each setting, make a list...
