Objective
Students will explore the gaucho story "El Gaucho Martín Fierro" as preparation for reading The Adventures of China Iron.
"Martín Fierro" is a traditional story from Argentina; The Adventures of China Iron is an intentional subversion of this epic. It retells the story from the perspective of Martin's wife--who in this telling is little more than an abused child. This lesson acquaints students with the epic so that as they read they can consider how Cabezón Cámara utilizes it, and why.

Discussion: We are about to read two works. One is considered the foundation of Argentina's national literature. It is a long poem from the 1800's, called "El Gaucho Martín Fierro." The other is a book reimagining this story from a woman's point of view, called The Adventures...
