· The story opens with a description of a woman walking alone at night.
· The woman carries “a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails” (1).
· It is 11 p.m. and a young boy tries to sneak from behind and steal the purse from the woman.
· The purse strap breaks sending the boy flat on his back on the sidewalk.
· The woman kicks the boy on his butt, picks him up and shakes him “until his teeth rattled” (1).
· The woman demands that the young boy pick up her purse and then she asks him, “Ain’t you ashamed of yourself?” (1).
· The boy says he is ashamed of himself.
