Objective
Students will study Luiselli's use of particular tone types to present events and discussions within the narrative, thereby shaping the reader's understanding of that event.
Valeria Luiselli's essay Tell Me How it Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions presents an excellent opportunity for students to study tone. Luiselli is in the unique position of having been a migrant to the United States herself, of having worked with child refugees within the fight against automatic deportation, and of having family members living within and moving between the countries discussed in her essay. Due to her close involvement with the topic, Luiselli often uses a tone of abject anger or one of sad sarcasm as she discusses the difficult plights of children fleeing their home countries for a better life.
