Objective
Tom Ripley is a self-hating young man who longs to be someone else.
The aim of this lesson is to examine Tom's character.
Lesson
1. Ask the students to write a scene from Tom's life in 20 years' time. How different will his life be? Will he have gained some self respect?
2. Ask the students to find another character in popular culture similar to Tom Ripley, but created after the Ripley novels. Ask the students to make comparisons between the two characters and write a few paragraphs about Tom Ripley's influence on popular culture.
3. Divide the students into two groups. One group should research Tom's life and the other group should think of questions they like to ask Tom about his life. Finish the lesson with a question and answer session.
4. Homework. Write Tom's character background.
