Because the plot is somewhat complicated, a clear understanding of what is going on in China and England at this point in history is important. The objective of this lesson is to define the term "setting" and gain a clear understanding of the place and time in which this story takes place.

Lesson

1. Definition: Ask the class what the term "setting" means. Write ideas on the board as they are offered. Have a student read the dictionary definition. Offer clarification as necessary making certain the class understands that setting includes both time and place.

2. In-Class Discussion: When and where is this novel set? What is going on in China at the time? What is going on in England? If the students are unsure of the historical context...
