Chapters 1-2
• At Lord Horn's garden party, Richard St. Vier kills two other swordsmen and flees home to his lover Alec in the slums of Riverside.
• Duchess Diane Tremontaine and Lady Mary Halliday gossip over brunch, revealing that Lady Mary's husband Basil is serving his third and last legal term in the Council of Lords.
• Lady Lydia Godwin and her son Michael arrive at the bunch, and Michael is interested in the duchess and jealous of Lord Basil's masculinity.
Chapters 3-4
• Alec and Richard go to the Old Market, where Alec picks a fight and is defended by Richard, who kills the other man, Brent.
• Michael Godwin arranges to meet his casual lover Bertram Rossillion, but stands him up to secretly sleep with his wife behind his back.
• Lord Horn tries to seduce Michael after his escapade, but Michael backs out on seeing Lord Horn's age and ugliness...
