Lesson 1 (from Prologue to Part 1: Early Days)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to compare the mother of the narrator and the mother of Tracey, and the positive or negative influence they had on their daughters' lives. The narrator's mother was a woman who prized education and politics. She might be poor, but she was not going to let that hold her back. Tracey's mother was a single mother who did not receive state assistance. She was often gone and left Tracey alone for hours.
