1. In Chapter 1, what was Serena's upbringing?

Serena is the daughter of an Anglican bishop. She grew up with her sister Lucy in the cathedral precinct of a small city in east England. Her father was religious enough to rise through the church ranks without intruding too much on his family's lives. She had a relatively uneventful time in school.

Serena is dating a history student named Jeremy Mott. One evening they run into Tony Canning, who is Jeremy's history tutor. Jeremy introduces Serena to Canning and gets acquainted over tea at Canning's rooms.
