Right away we find out that the novel is taking place near farmland in the south. We later discover that it is in Lowfield, Mississippi. It appears to be the summer or close to the summer, as Catherine complains about the heat. The fact that the cotton has not yet been harvested also leads us to believe that it is not fall yet. The location is hot, dusty, and dry as noted by the dust.
