Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 & 2)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background. Students will discuss facts about the author. Students will research information about the author and analyze why he may have written Swami and Friends.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of Swami and Friends? When was he born? How old was he when the book was published? Where is he from? Has he written any other books? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: In small groups, have students compile a list of facts about the author based on information in the book and class discussion. Encourage students to include information that impacts the novel’s themes and characters. Regroup and ask students to share their facts, writing the lists on the board for all to see.
