· The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Narayan, R.K.. Swami and Friends. The Michigan State College Press, 1954.

· Chapter 1, Monday Morning, begins on page 3 and introduces the character Swaminathan who is reluctant to get ready for school on Monday morning.

· Swami sits at his desk in the corner of his father’s room thinking of all the schoolwork he has to do in two hours before getting ready for school.

· In class, Swami watches the toddlers from Infant Standards through the bars of his classroom window.

· Swami’s teacher, Vedanayagam, whom Swami finds boring, asks students for their homework, which Swami places on his table.

· While observing how unattractive Swami thinks the teacher is, Vedanayagam pinches Swami’s elbow with one hand, while writing “Very Bad” (4).
