Objective

Dan Simmons is an American author known for writing fiction in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and horror. Some of his award-winning include "Hyperion", "Song of Kali" and "A Winter Haunting". This lesson discusses the author of "Summer of Night," Dan Simmons.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Dan Simmons. Explore other work he has written, as well as his personal background. Take a look at interviews and the author's official website to gain information on his writing and where "Summer of Night" fits in with his other novels.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Dan Simmons and his canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels written by Dan Simmons during their presentation. At the end of the presentations, have students compare the tone and style of "Summer of Night...
