Objective
Objective: The name of the neighborhood is the Bottom, for a number of obvious reasons. Today's objective is to discuss the role of names in how we perceive certain things in our lives.
1. Have each student look up the meaning of their own name and share with the class whether they think it is appropriate.
2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether or not they think Bottom is an appropriate name for the neighborhood. Why or why not? Do they have any suggestions for other names the book could have used?
3. As a class, have students discuss the importance of names. What do names do? What are some of the positive benefits? What are some of the disadvantages of names? If a neighborhood is called 'Bottom' for a long period of time, and everyone refers to it as such, what might this do to the community? What...
