Objective

Chapter 1. Because Gustad Noble, the protagonist, is a very religious man, religion plays a large part in his thinking and activities, as well as those of his family; therefore, it is important to pay attention to the descriptions of his religion contained in this chapter. The objective of this lesson is to explore what the first chapter tells the reader about Gustad's religious practices.

1. Writing assignment. Find at least three practices or objects that are present in Gustad's religion as mentioned in Chapter 1. Some of these items may be unfamiliar to you; therefore, write everything you can figure out about them from the context, and then conduct some brief Internet research to fill in the gaps in your knowledge.
