In the 1940's, Joseph Campbell wrote about archetypes in stories, various types of events and characters that appear over and over again in literature and stories of all kinds, because they are effective and interesting, and because people can relate easily to them. One of these archetypes is the "Call to Adventure," when the protagonist is presented with a challenge or quest that must be undertaken. Jago Jalo's invitation to see the flat planet is a clear example of this, and it sets the entire story in motion. This lesson is about the call to adventure. Students should understand how Jago's call to adventure is important in this story.
