1. In the Prologue, how does Hank explain that his life was not easy as a child?

Hank was the son of professors who moved around a lot. He was an only child to parents that did not seem suited to having children. He was a noisy and energetic kid, always full of questions. His father just did not seem to understand him, or get any enjoyment out of being a father. His mother loved him and gave him some attention, but was not an overly motherly woman.

2. What did Henry, as his parents called him, really want when he was a child? How did he go about convincing them to fulfill his dream?

The one thing that Hank wanted when he was a child was a dog. When he was eight, he increased the pressure on his parents by turning every conversation into one about a dog. He left dog books around, and bought a fancy dog collar and leash for his hoped-for pet.
