Lesson 1 (from Prologue)
Objective
Exposition occurs in writing when the author explains background information or elaborates on a point that needs more explanation to move the narrative along. This lesson will discuss exposition.
Lesson
1) Class discussion:
a) Discuss the content of the Prologue to "Straight Man".
b) How does the author introduce new information (exposition) that is necessary for the reader to know? (For example: characters, setting, the narrator's background.)
c) What does the reader find out by reading the Prologue that appears to be or is obviously pertinent to the rest of the novel?
2) Partner or group work: Referring to the novel thus far, have the students make a list of 8-10 important points of exposition. They should be able to explain why they have chosen those points, (i.e., to analyze why the author has included them in the story). Regroup as a class and discuss results.
