1. Class Discussion: Why is Maria sent to work at the von Trapp Villa? What is her job there? What are her first impressions of the villa, the Captain, and the children? What surprises her about life at the villa? What does she seem to miss about the Abbey? How does she try to adjust to her new life?

2. Writing Assignment: Compare and contrast Maria's life at the villa and her life at the abbey.
