Chapter 1, Funeral Voices, and Chapter 2, Heaven for Cars
• In Chapter 1, "Funeral Voices," Alex wakes in the middle of the night to the sound of knocking on the door.
• Alex overhears the police telling Alex's housekeeper and good friend, Jack Starbright, that his uncle, Ian, has been killed in a car accident.
• Ian has been Alex's guardian since he was an infant after his parents died; Alex wants to look in his uncle's office for his will, but Jack encourages him to wait until after the funeral.
• The funeral is planned by Mr. Crawley, an executive from the bank where Ian worked, Royal and General.
• At the funeral, Alex is puzzled by the claims of patriotism made by everyone who eulogized Ian, and meets Mr. Blunt, the head of the bank, a man he finds cold.
• When Alex and Jack get home from the funeral, they find that someone...
