Objective
Chapter one chronicles Daisy's unusual parents and birth.
The objective of this lesson is to examine and discuss the circumstances of Daisy's birth and how they may impact the story later on. Also, to examine how loss of a parent can impact a person, in general.

Class Discussion 1:
How might losing her mother affect Daisy, as the story progresses?
Class Discussion 2:
How might losing his wife affect Cuyler's attitude toward his new daughter, Daisy?
Class Activity:
Ask each student to write an in-class essay of at least 500 words about how they would feel if they lost a parent, like Daisy did, and how they think those feelings will affect Daisy as the story moves on. For example, what things would most girls rely on a mother for that Daisy will no longer have a mother to teach her?
