1. Why is Lucas having trouble reading Roy's letter?
The letter has been redacted by censors because it references events happening in the war. More importantly, though. Lucas's parents are fighting with one another, something Lucas says they often do. When Lucas complains, his mother simply tells him the are trying to "work something out" (6).
2. Describe Connor's home.
Lucas describes Connor's home as lifeless and colorless. It is always dark. He notes there is absolutely no dust and that no one in the house ever seems to speak.
3. What happens to Lucas on his first walk in the woods?
He finds a cabin. Near the cabin is an enormous dog house. Two dogs rush from the doghouse, barking at him and chasing him. He runs for his life, sure they will attack him. However, after tripping over a root and falling, the dogs surround him and begin licking his face. He runs with them all the way back to the cabin.
