Lucas frequently imagines this as a symbol for this summer of his life, in 1969. It is the first image of the novel. It is sometimes mentioned in another form as a piece of playground equipment.
The Forest
Lucas is lost here when he discovers Zoe Dinismore's house. It is where he runs with the dogs. Later, he takes Libby Weller here for a picnic. While the young people in the novel all find comfort here, the adults seem to regard it mostly with fear and suspicion.
The Dogs
These belong to Zoe and are Lucas's first connection to her. Named after famous painters, Lucas runs with them every morning as a kind of therapy.
Sunlight
Lucas notes that Connor's house never seems to have this. Later, he is impressed by the way Zoe handles it in her painting. It appears at other important points in the novel...
