Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-3)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the opening passages of the novel and consider the various tools the author uses to establish the narrator -- Lucas's -- voice.
For this first lesson, students will not yet have begun the novel. This is an excellent time to have them perform a close reading of a passage since they have not yet developed any opinions about the characters, the plot, or the setting. In particular, they might focus on the first-person narrator's voice and how the author uses diction, imagery, details, language, and syntax to establish it.
