Once a bus driver who caused a terrible accident, she has lived with her guilt for 16 years. In the beginning of the novel, she tries to commit suicide. As the novel goes on, however, she helps other characters to overcome their own traumas and depressions.

Lucas's best friend is pale and does not leave his house much. Early in the novel, he is depressed, in part over his parents' relationship. He steals his father's gun thinking of hurting himself.
