Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Hsu's recollections of growing up in a family with parents who were recent immigrants. At times, Hsu felt as if he and his parents were assimilating into American culture at the same time. When Hsu's father moved back to Taiwan in the 1990s, when Hsu was a teenager, the family bought a pair of fax machines so that they could communicate more easily and efficiently.
Lesson
Class Discussion: How does Hsu describe his parents' backgrounds and connections to both America and to Taiwan? What parts of American culture do Hsu's parents seem to connect mostly strongly with? What connections does Hsu feel towards Taiwan and his family there?
