Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze how Reynolds and Kendi describe Gomes Eanes de Zurara's influence on society's attitudes towards race and racism. Zurara was a Portuguese writer who chronicled the life of Prince Henry, who traded slaves in the 1400s. Zurara was a loyal commander in Prince Henry's army, but Zurara's legacy is in his The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea, an enormously popular book in which he acted as a "cheerleader" for racism and racist ideas.
