Lesson 1 (from Prologue)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Ibram X. Kendi’s nonfiction book Stamped from the Beginning. Students will read the Prologue, research and discuss the cases presented, and examine the social and cultural system of racism in contemporary America. In his Prologue, Kendi describes the current atmosphere of racial tension in the U.S., the police killings that drove the #Black Lives Matter movement, and the staggering disparities between Blacks killed by police and their White counterparts.
Lesson
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue to Stamped from the Beginning. As a group, discuss your personal exposure to racism and racist attitudes in America. How many of the cases presented of police killings do you personally recall, and what impacts did the decisions in those cases have?
