Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the Cornbright brothers' reaction to the news of their mother Kiki Pew Fitzsimmons's disappearance and probable death. Hiaasen portrays Chance and Chase Cornbright as grown men who are still spoiled brats, raised in opulence and concerned only about protecting and growing their fortune. Both Cornbright men are less than distraught about their mother's disappearance, and their main objective seems to be calculating how much they stand to inherit after her death.

Class Discussion: Who is Kiki Pew Fitzsimmons? What happens to Kiki in Part I? Who are Kiki's sons? How do Kiki's sons, the Cornbright brothers, react to the news of her death? Why do you think Hiaasen chooses to portray the Cornbright brothers as thoroughly terrible characters with no redeeming qualities?
