Objective

Objective: The setting is the time and place in which a story takes place. Setting is important in understanding the circumstances and surroundings of the characters and how those circumstances can sometimes influence the decisions the characters make. Today's lesson is on the literary element: setting.

1) Have students define the literary element, setting. Then, hold a class discussion on how the setting of a story can influence the actions and decisions made by the characters. Provide examples such as the Dust Bowl in Grapes of Wrath.

2) Have students create a setting chart that analyzes the setting of The Square Root of Wonderful. This chart has 4 squares held together in the middle with a circle.
