Objective

Objective: The exposition is thought of as the introductory material presented in the beginning of a story. It can include character introductions, the setting, and any other aspects that help create the atmosphere for the story. The objective of Lesson #1 is to understand how the exposition that Hurston provides in her story contributes to the reader's first impression of the novel and characters.

1) Class discussion: What is the purpose of an exposition and why is it important? What does Hurston include in the exposition of this particular story? Do you think she should have included anything else that would have helped the reader relate to the characters' situations?

2) Small group activity: Divide the class into groups of 3-4 and ask them to summarize the exposition in this work. Ask them to write down their findings and present them to the rest of the class.
